PREVIEW: Ironman 70.3 Elsinore 2026

PREVIEW: Ironman 70.3 Elsinore 2026

Last Call for World Championship Qualification

On Sunday, the world's triathlon elite return to Danish soil. Beyond the glory of victory, athletes will battle for the final 2 x 3 slots (M/F) for the 70.3 World Championship in Nice before the qualification window slams shut at the end of the weekend.

Of the top 20 seeded PRO men, only 5 have already secured their qualification, while nearly half (9) of the top 20 women already have their tickets. This guarantees high-stakes drama stretching far beyond the podium and well into the top 10.

70.3 Elsinore built a stellar international reputation over several seasons thanks to hosting the European Championship (2018–2021). However, here in 2026, it is the prestigious Ironman PRO Series drawing the sport's biggest international names to North Zealand.

Records Are Set to Fall

Most triathlon fans surely remember the latest male PRO winner, Daniel Bækkegård, from 2022, where he set the current bike course record of 2:00:26.

Four years is a relatively short time, but the sport’s technological evolution during this period has been massive - especially regarding aerodynamic breakthroughs.

Five years ago, a budding superstar named Magnus Ditlev had a wild plan: to ride the 90 km bike leg in sub-2 hours. It sounded like madness. Was it some kind of avant-garde Copenhagen satire?

Fast forward to this Sunday's race, where no one will blink an eye if 5 to 10 athletes break that 2-hour barrier. We fully expect the front-runners to go sub-2 hours, and we are reserving the ultimate "überbiker" label for anyone who can touch the 1:55:00 mark.

Undefeated Belgian is the Heavy Favorite

The Belgian Tokyo 2021 Olympic 4th-place finisher, Marten Van Riel, is certainly not invincible, but he holds a massive psychological edge: he remains undefeated at the 70.3 distance - an incredible "flex" spanning multiple seasons (2019–2025).

However, because they are racing in the shadow of Kronborg Castle, Shakespearean drama is always in the air, and being the favorite does not guarantee victory. Just ask Javier Gomez, the five-time World Champion who executed his race to perfection in 2019, only to lose the gold right on the finishing straight!

Also, Keep an Eye On...

Jamie Riddle: The South African swim powerhouse will likely set the pace during the first 1.9 km. He hasn't had the best half-season so far, but he did finish 7th at the 70.3 World Championship last year!

Kyle Smith: The New Zealand bricklayer should be a fan favorite for anyone who loves old-school triathlon racing! He finished 5th here in 2021 after tearing the field apart solo, TT-style, on the bike.

Kat Matthews: On the women's side, one favorite towers above the rest. Last year's Ironman Pro Series winner is using this as a tune-up before racing Challenge Roth in a few weeks. It will be incredibly exciting to see if Lucy Charles-Barclay’s 5-year-old overall course record (3:59:56) is about to fall.

FUSION GREATEST HITS (Top 20 Seeded)

Valdemar Solok: Riding an incredible wave of form after taking a spectacular victory at Challenge Cesenatico and a 2nd place in Samorin within just 14 days back in May! Valdemar has targeted Elsinore as one of his absolute main goals of the season.

Kristian Høgenhaug: "The Hawk" is hunting for valuable Ironman Pro Series points, but is primarily using this to test his form ahead of Challenge Roth. Kristian recently tested his running legs at the local B.A.C. Half Marathon, clocking a superb time of 1:08:38 to finish 5th overall.

Jens Emil Sloth Nielsen: Well-known for his Xterra off-road accolades, Jens Emil has long since proven he can fly on the asphalt too. Fun fact: he stood on the podium alongside heavy favorite Marten Van Riel at last year's 70.3 Nice. On that day, Jens Emil posted the fastest run split of the field in 1:08:56 - a whopping 4 minutes faster than the Belgian.

Emil Holm: The newly crowned Danish Middle Distance Champion looks like an athlete hitting peak form at just the right time.

Thor Bendix Madsen: The local hero is finally making his comeback after a stubborn injury that has plagued him since early spring. Thor had his big international breakthrough right here in Elsinore back in 2022, securing 5th place overall and the 3rd fastest bike split of the day.
